Health Education

If you are currently experiencing signs or symptoms of illness, please call (510) 642-2000 for an appointment. Please do not schedule during your period. If needed, this visit may include a pap smear, pelvic exam, breast check and STI testing (including HIV). If you have vaginal symptoms, please call (510) 642-2000 to schedule a separate appointment. A pap smear and pelvic exam are not required to begin a birth control method.

This is a nurse-only appointment for an HIV lab order (no exam or other testing is included). Please schedule a Sexually Transmitted Infection Visit if you want to test for HIV and sexually transmitted infections. If you already have a scheduled medical appointment, your clinician can order the HIV test, you don't need to schedule this appointment.

This is an appointment with a nurse to receive follow-up Depo-Provera injections. Injections should be 11-13 weeks apart. If it has been more than 13 weeks, please call the advice nurse at (510) 643-7197.

This is an appointment with a trained student peer educator. The appointment is free and confidential, and partners are welcome. Sample topics:

This is an appointment to test for sexually transmitted infections (can include HIV), regardless of whether you have symptoms. For women, please do not schedule during your period.

The Tang Center offers two types of Health Education appointments, which are described below.

Health and Wellness Education
This 60-minute health coaching session with a professional health educator will help you make simple changes in your lifestyle to improve your well being, reduce your stress, and increase your success. Topics can include time management, procrastination, healthy eating, communication, and sexuality concerns. Coaching sessions offer the flexibility of one to four hour-long informal sessions to assist in creating a plan with specific goals and assess progress towards those health goals. Sexual Health Education Appointment
This is a 45-minute appointment with a trained student peer educator. The appointment is free and confidential, and partners are welcome. Sample topics:

Allergy Injections

This is an appointment with a nurse for antigen (allergy) shots. This appointment is for patients who have already been receiving allergy injections at Tang. All others, please call (510) 643-7177 for information.

Hepatitis B Vaccination

This is an appointment to begin or continue the three-part Hepatitis B immunization series.

Positive TB Skin Test Follow-Up

This is a follow-up or clearance appointment with a nurse for people who have had a positive TB test result and a negative chest x-ray.

Immunizations

This is an appointment with a nurse for immunizations. If you are requesting travel-related immunizations, you must have had a travel consultation visit at UHS first. (To schedule a travel consultation, call (510) 643-7177.)
